Biography
I'm Helen, and I'm the proud mother of three amazing young people, aged 25, 22, and 18, all of whom have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) of varying degrees. My 22-year-old son, in particular, has complex needs due to Mosaic Edward's Syndrome, microcephaly, learning disabilities, and various health issues. My journey as a carer began with him, leading me to become involved with the original Parent Carer Forum.
I joined the PCF to make a difference in the lives of families navigating the SEND system. As a full-time carer, I wanted the flexibility to support my son while advocating for systemic change. I firmly believe that every child deserves access to quality education and community inclusion, regardless of their needs. My role within the WNVP is to work strategically with parents, carers, families, and the local authority to make this vision a reality
I would describe myself as caring, laid-back, and always ready to lend a helping hand. As a mum, I often find myself playing the role of a taxi, shuttling my kids around to various activities and appointments. One of my favourite hobbies is performing in my local area pantomime, where I can let loose and have fun on stage. I also sing in a local choir which I find helps me to relax and shut off from the challenges of caring!
